Gender is a social construct and refers to how society distinguishes masculine from feminine. Gender is defined by behavior and is cultural. Gender roles are socially constructed roles that are determined and expected by society to be followed by each individual. Mass media is the main source responsible for the perpetuation of gender roles in American society.
